Lead Generation System for Coaches: Generate, Nurture, Book

October 30, 2026

If you rely on word of mouth and referrals for leads and you're not making as much as you'd like, the problem usually isn't effort. It's that you don't have a system. In this post I'm going to break down the lead generation system for coaches that I use and teach, which I call the coaching growth ecosystem. It has three parts: generate, nurture, and book. By the end you'll know what each part does and what to put in place first.

Why you're not getting leads

One of the biggest things coaches ask me is, "I'm putting in all this work, why isn't it working?" I get it. Most of you are not marketers by trade. You're experts in your field.

Here's the foundation. Before you can get leads, you need awareness. People need to know you exist. This is where most coaches actually fail. They feel like they're doing the work, but when it comes down to it, nobody is seeing their stuff.

That's what the coaching growth ecosystem fixes. Three parts:

  • Generate: get attention and turn it into leads.
  • Nurture: get those leads to know, like and trust you.
  • Book: invite them onto a call.

Part 1: Generate

Why referrals alone keep you slow

Word of mouth and referrals are a great thing. I'm not saying they're bad. But relying on them is not a great business model. How often are you actually going back to clients and asking, "Do you know anybody?" And even when you do, each person only knows so many people. It can work over time if your product is amazing, but it starts slow.

Why content is a weak way to generate leads at the start

The other thing people say is "just make a bunch of content." Content is important. But for generating leads, I don't think it's the most effective, especially early on.

Here's why. Say you have a thousand followers. When you post, a thousand people don't see it. The platform shows it to maybe 2 to 10% of your followers first. If they like it, it goes out to more, maybe 10 to 25%. If those people like it, it keeps going, and if it keeps working it reaches people outside your followers. That's what going viral is.

The hard part is who's in that first small group. For most newer coaches, it's friends and family. They like your stuff to support you, but they're not your ideal clients, and they're not going to keep engaging with it every day. And so most posts die early. Some platforms are moving more toward interest instead of followers, which helps, but it's still nowhere near as consistent.

Why paid ads are the best way to generate

In my opinion, and from what we've seen work best, the way to put in a lead generation system is paid ads.

A lot of people hear that and say, "No, I don't want to waste money." So let me take the mystery out of it. Paid ads is just you with content, except instead of hoping your followers see it, you tell Facebook, "This is my ideal client, the person I want to serve. Put my post in front of them." And you pay a price for that. That's all it is.

To put it in perspective, and this is a big range because some industries have more competition, getting shown a thousand times might cost around 15 bucks on the low end and around 100 on the high end. Let's say about 40.

Now walk it down the funnel with easy numbers, just to see how it works:

  • A thousand of the right people see your ad.
  • About 2.5% click. That's 25 clicks.
  • Around 30% of those turn into leads. Call it about 7.
  • You get in touch with some of them. Say you talk to 3.
  • Two agree to get on a call.
  • One becomes a client.

Typically it costs more than 40 bucks to get to one client. These numbers are just to show the flow. But if you sell a $5,000 coaching program, you can see why it's a worthwhile trade. And if one of the numbers is off, say your click rate is way under where it should be, you know exactly which part to fix.

One warning. Make sure you know what you're doing, or get help, because people who go in without a plan waste money. That's where the bad reputation comes from. Giving an F1 car to a 16 year old who just learned to drive doesn't mean they'll win the race. They don't know how to use the vehicle. If you want to start carefully, read how to add paid ads without wasting money.

Part 2: Nurture

Right now there's a lot of skepticism and distrust out there. So once someone becomes a lead, you need them to know you, like you, trust you, and see you as an authority who can solve their problem.

The best way to do that is content. And this is where content really shines. Not making content forever and hoping it brings clients, but using it on purpose. You generate attention with ads, you collect their information so they become a lead, and then you put your content back in front of them.

That's exactly how my own business works. I generate mostly with paid ads, and I nurture with content. Long form content is great for this, because people can see you actually know what you're talking about. They watch and think, "This makes sense." And they start to trust you.

So why can't you do the same thing? Take the biggest questions your clients ask and make videos answering them. That's your nurture.

Part 3: Book

The last part is giving people a way to take the next step. Usually that's booking a call.

Not everyone is ready. That's fine. But some people are, and if you never invite them, they may never book. They might go work with someone else instead. Sales is a service, and you have to invite people forward.

A mentor of mine was getting feedback from ChatGPT on a program he wanted to start, and it told him straight: hurry up and start, because if you don't, someone with less integrity is going to sell the people who need the help. That's the point of the book step. Make the call to action. Get them on a call. Then sell them, so you can actually help them. And when they're on that call, here's how to turn sales calls into clients.

The one tweak that changed a coach's lead flow

A coach I worked with went from a handful of leads a month to hundreds. Two changes did it.

First, we moved her from only word of mouth and referrals to paid ads. Second, we changed the message. Instead of "here are the services I provide," we spoke to her ideal client's pain points and their goals.

A little tip on that. If you want people to take quick action, lean more on the pain, because people are motivated to get out of pain right now. If you want them to keep going long term, paint the bright future, because people who only hear about pain eventually lose hope.

FAQ

What is the best lead generation strategy for coaches?

Generate attention with paid ads, nurture leads with content, and give them a clear way to book a call. Referrals and organic content help, but they're slower and less consistent on their own.

Is content or paid ads better for getting coaching leads?

Paid ads are better for generating leads, especially early on. Content is better for nurturing them once they know you exist.

How much do Facebook ads cost for coaches?

It depends on your industry. Being shown a thousand times can run from about 15 to 100 dollars, often around 40. Start with a plan so you aren't wasting that spend.
